The debut of Joe Flacco with the Cleveland Browns was up and down and showed some promise but it eventually went down as a loss.

Cleveland lost to the Rams by two scores, though it was closer than the score may imply. The Rams third straight win came by a 36-19 margin.

Flacco threw an interception deep to Rams S John Johnson III that he was able to return for a big chunk with less than seven minutes remaining. It set up an eventual go-ahead score by Cooper Kupp that would push the lead to eight points.

The downside of Johnson grabbing that interception is that the Browns are paying him over $8 million this season. Cleveland cut Johnson as a cap casualty following last season. It was the game-changing point of this contest.

Los Angeles put together 400 yards of offense and Cleveland’s defense continues their struggling ways on the road. It was a tough day for the defense who missed Denzel Ward.

Overall, Flacco played well enough with the Browns in his debut for the season. The veteran quarterback completed 23-of-44 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Flacco did throw the interception, as mentioned.

A missed kick following the last score by Dustin Hopkins for the Browns was big but it proved not to be as costly as it could have been.

Next week isn’t easier, as the Browns will have the Jacksonville Jaguars at home, a game that they badly need to win.
