The Cleveland Browns are 2-2 at their very early bye week and there is work to be done if they want to improve.

Right now, the Browns are an average team with a blowout loss and another loss they had no business taking. The early week off came at a much-needed time when the team is already beaten up a bit.

If the Browns want to take the next step from being just an average team, it is going to take all hands on deck. I’m highlighting the lowest-graded players here that need to be better.

I’m using Pro Football Focus, as they’re a solid tool in this space. It isn’t the end all be all but it is a tool to take a look inside.

DT Jordan Elliott 44.3

Elliott is playing about 25 snaps a game and has actually improved from the last couple of years. The run defense is where Elliott continues to get taken out of plays and is a non-factor at times. As a pass rusher, Elliott has been solid. He has a sack and a pair of hurries. At this point, Elliott is what he is.

LT Jedrick Wills Jr. 45.4

Wills is currently playing the worst football of his career and is a major problem for the offensive line. Wills is giving up pressure at a higher rate than he ever has. Right now there doesn’t look to be a realistic fix, so the Browns badly need him to be at least the average player he’s been in the past.

WR Donovan Peoples-Jones 52.8

Through four games, Peoples-Jones has just six catches for 75 yards. Right now, DPJ isn’t as big of a factor in the offense as he was the last couple of years. Deshaun Watson hasn’t built a connection with him on the field yet. Maybe that’ll develop as the year goes on.

RT Dawand Jones 55.5

When you think about the fact that Jones wasn’t expected to play this season, he’s doing exceptional. Jones is solid in pass protection and is a work in progress in the run game. The game reps will continue to be the best benefit for the rookie from Ohio State.

TE David Njoku 56.2

Njoku’s utilization is a bit low for a guy who has the talent to be one of the better tight ends in the NFL. Njoku has 16 catches for 138 yards. In years past, he’s been a problem after the catch. That is not the case so far this year.
