We are near the halfway point of the NFL season and something is becoming clear for the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns need to extend two players on the defense as soon as possible. With how DT Maurice Hurst and S Grant Delpit have played this season, they should be in the future plans for the Browns.
Both players have been a vital part of the Browns’ defense which has become one of the better in the NFL, even if they have had some issues the last couple of weeks.
Starting with Hurst, he’s on a one-year deal. When they signed him I said he was going to be something for this team if he could stay healthy. That had been the biggest question mark in his career to this point. Hurst didn’t play in 2022, missed 14 games in 2021 and time in 2020.
So far this season, Hurst has 15 tackles, a half-sack, an interception, and a fumble recovery. Cleveland has a nice set of defensive tackles on the field when Hurst and Tomlinson are both out there. Pro Football Focus has Hurst graded as one of the best defensive tackles in the game this season. With him being on a one-year deal the sample size is small, so the Browns aren’t going to have to break the bank to give him say a two-year deal.
On the other hand, Delpit started the year very strong before coming down to earth a bit. The safety has 38 tackles, an interception, and has been flying all over the field. Cleveland’s best safety is in the final year of his rookie contract.
The Browns will want to keep the defense together beyond this season and Delpit is a vital part of that. At just 25 years old, Delpit is just now coming into the player that he can be.
General manager Andrew Berry would be wise to find a way to strike a deal with both of these players. Getting them done in season would be ideal, so you have no chance of them hitting the open market in March.
If their play continues at the rate it has been this season, the Browns will have no reason not to make these moves.
