Browns’ new starter’s big plan with one of the top available free agents has already blown up for Cleveland
One of Cleveland’s new players was trying to bring in a top free agent, but it’s not going to happen.
The Cleveland Browns made several additions along the offensive line through free agency and it had to happen with all five starters from last year being free agents.
One player the Browns brought in on a two-year deal is former Green Bay Packers G/C Elgton Jenkins. It’s unclear whether Jenkins will play guard or center, but he’s going to be a starter for Cleveland up front.
Jenkins was all for his former teammate in Green Bay LT Rasheed Walker to join him, but it’s not going to happen.
Potential Browns OL target Rasheed Walker is heading to the NFC
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Walker is heading to the Carolina Panthers on a one-year deal. Walker, 26, figured to receive a multi-year deal in free agency, and it’s a bit of a development he didn’t.
Walker was a name connected to Cleveland a ton leading up to free agency. After three seasons as a starter for Green Bay, Walker seemed to be the next free agent offensive tackle set to be paid. Walker is no All-Pro or anything, but even average offensive tackles typically receive big paydays.
Cleveland has up to four of their five offensive line spots figured out for next season already. The left tackle spot is the only position they don’t have a starter in place, so they were always going to be connected to Walker as long as he was out there.
The 6-foot-6 offensive tackle still being available after four full days of free agency was an indictment that he probably wasn’t going to receive close to the four-year deal paying him upwards of $20 million a season some believed he could command.
Cleveland will have options with what they can do for left tackle. Someone like Georgia’s Monroe Freeling could be the answer in the draft, or perhaps Utah’s Caleb Lomu. Either way, there are several options still out there for where the Browns could go for their next left tackle.
