After a second straight season ending injury, there was always going to be a blurry vision on whether or not the Cleveland Browns would have Nick Chubb back
Since the Browns drafted Chubb in 2018, he has been the identity for the team on offense for the most part and a fan favorite along the way. After drafting two running backs recently and agreeing to a pay cut with Jerome Ford, the writing is on the wall for Chubb not to be back.
Ford salary of $3.40 million was reduced to a $1.75 million and pretty much etched Ford’s spot on the roster for 2025 unless they trade him.
Browns have a new identity at running back
Back-to-back seasons with season-ending injuries stick out like a sore thumb and when Chubb was on the field last season, he averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry.
Cleveland hopes to have found their running back of the future in this draft. Cleveland doubled down with Quinshon Judkins and Dylan’s Sampson, who both have a shot at being long term pieces for the Browns.
Chubb had four straight seasons of 1,000 yards rushing and he looked like the best pure runner in the league during that time from 2019-2022. The best-case scenario for Chubb’s career is that he can return to form in some way, but he is 29 years old and has had two significant knee injuries.
Cleveland having Ford in the mix as well can provide big-play ability as a depth running back. If the Browns can pair a the rookies with Ford, they should have a pretty good running back room as long as they stay healthy.
The Browns bringing back Chubb is what just about everyone wanted to see. Now, all eyes will be on where Chubb is going to land. It looks like that place won’t be Cleveland. Chubb will always be appreciated for his time in Cleveland where he became a fan favorite.
