Cleveland Browns have been busy with reworking the books this month and that continued today.
Jedrick Wills Jr. had his contract restructured in a move that created about $1.8 million in cap space for the team. Cleveland chose to convert nearly $2.3 million of Wills’ base salary into a signing bonus and added three void years.
Within the last few weeks, the Browns have restructured other contracts including those of; Myles Garrett, Joel Bitonio, and David Njoku.
Cleveland already led the NFL in cap space but they continue to build that lead. The thought is that the Browns will roll just about all of this over to deflate next year’s number of over $50 million above the cap.
The Browns currently have over $32 million in cap space and that’s well above the next closest team, the Arizona Cardinals who have about $20 million.
Restructuring contracts is a point of emphasis for the Browns’ front office to continue to be flexible year in and year out.
Next season will be Wills’ fifth-year option. If he improves his play this season, he could be in line for a new contract. If not, the Browns will have him play that fifth-year deal out to see what the future holds.
The train that never stops that is contract restructures for the Browns continues to chug along. Their latest happens to protect the blind side of Deshaun Watson.
Where the Browns cap space situation currently stands
Cleveland has put themselves in a good spot going forward.
