We are now at the point where the Cleveland Browns and the 31 other teams in the NFL are in their dead period until training camp begins.
Things will be mostly quiet over the next month but there are still things to talk about.
I’ve marked today as a good point to talk about some players that could single-handedly change the 2024 season. it would be a big, positive impact that helps the Browns become a better team. I’m going to leave out obvious names like Myles Garrett, Deshaun Watson, Amari Cooper, and Nick Chubb.
WR Cedric Tillman
Tillman was a standout player through OTAs with even more opportunity due to Amari Cooper holding out with his contract situation. As a rookie, Tillman had less than 300 yards receiving.
The Browns have a couple of young wideouts that they need to continue to develop and Tillman is one of them. At 6-foot-3 and operating with a big catch radius, Tillman has a spot in this offense if he can earn it. Early signs in OTAs show that he will be taking a step forward in 2024.
Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudy, and Elijah Moore are ahead of Tillman on the depth chart but he very well could leap ahead of anyone other than Cooper in the room.
LT Jedrick Wills Jr.
Since the Browns took Wills at the No. 10 overall slot in the 2021 NFL Draft. Since then, Wills has started still 53 games he’s played in and has dealt with injuries along the way. Wills played in eight games last year before missing the rest of the way with a knee injury.
Wills has not shown the consistency that deserves a second contract from Cleveland. Ankle injuries and lower leg injuries have impacted his play on the field at times and it would be fair to say his best season may have come as a rookie.
Still, the Browns picked up his fifth-year option and believe in his ability to be a guy for the team. Cleveland needs Wills to have a strong 2024 season or they will be moving off of him after the year.
S Grant Delpit
Delpit took the jump last year that has him up there with the top ten safeties in the NFL. The problem is that Delpit played in 13 games before having his season ended and the Browns missed him when he was out. He was not named to his first Pro Bowl, but he very well could be on the brink of doing that.
Cleveland has a safety in Delpit that can do it all from getting after the quarterback or interpreting a pass. He is a lengthy ballhawk in the secondary who will look to improve from one interception that he had last season.
If Delpit can build off of last year and show his consistency from year to year, the defense is going to benefit a whole lot.
Browns’ veteran safety has the perfect role for LeBron James to come to Cleveland and play in the NFL
What a story that would be.
