Cleveland Browns have an important decision to make shortly that will have implications for the team going forward.
The Browns are looking for a new offensive coordinator after letting Alex Van Pelt go after four seasons. Additionally, tight ends T.C. McCartney and running backs coach Stump Mitchell won’t be back.
One thing that has to be watched is whether Kevin Stefanski gives up the playcalling or not. Van Pelt had a part in the offensive game planning, but he was not the playcaller.
Where could Cleveland turn to get their next offensive coordinator?
Eric Bieniemy
Bieniemy was with the Kansas City Chiefs for 10 years and flirted with the idea of becoming a head coach multiple times toward the end of his tenure. One of those times, Deshaun Watson reportedly wanted him hired in Houston. The Texans did not interview him, so it never happened.
There is an uncomfortable pass that comes with Bieniemy. Right now, he is with the Washington Commanders as the playcaller. With a new coach set to take over there, Bieniemy could be available soon.
A coach who has spent a lot of years under a great offensive mind with Andy Reid. You have to put the guy that Watson advocated for before on the list.
Tim Kelly
Kelly has a history with Watson in Houston where he was the offensive coordinator for a couple of years. Now, Kelly is the playcaller for the Titans but could be on his way out after Mike Vrabel was let go.
Since 2013, Kelly has been in the NFL coaching world and that time has been spent between the Texans and Titans. This is one that I would be pretty interested in having on the staff.
Dan Pitcher
Pitcher has been working in some capacity with Joe Burrow since the Bengals drafted him. After being the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2019, Pitcher has been the quarterbacks coach since 2020. Before Alex Van Pelt came to Cleveland, he was the quarterbacks coach in Cincinnati. Maybe they look at that route again.
Shane Waldron
Waldron has been leading the Seattle Seahawks offensive since 2021 but his future there is cloudy with Pete Carroll no longer the head coach. Waldron got his jump in the NFL under Sean McVay with the Rams.
Another name to watch that has won a couple of Super Bowls since entering the coaching world in 2005. Waldron has worked with plenty of talent in Seattle and has helped Geno Smith become a starting quarterback. We will have to see what his future holds first.
Browns shake the offensive coaching staff up following season ending
There are some changes being made for the Browns.
