Rookies were scheduled to report today for the Cleveland Browns as training camp kicks off for the newcomers. One notable absence is running back Quinshon Judkins, who has yet to sign his rookie contract.
Judkins was recently arrested in Florida on a charge of domestic violence, and the Browns appear to be in no rush to finalize his deal as he navigates the ongoing legal situation. When the team does decide to move forward with his contract, they’ll be faced with a significant decision.
Both players selected around Quinshon Judkins have received fully guaranteed contracts
Now, the Browns must determine whether to offer the former Ohio State star a fully guaranteed deal after both Seattle Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori and Miami Dolphins guard Jonah Savaiinaea—selected immediately before and after Judkins—signed four-year, fully guaranteed rookie contracts.
Cleveland has to weigh the risk of guaranteeing Judkins’ contract with having an arrest on record before he’s even attended his first NFL training camp. Given the Browns’ history of controversial decisions, the optics of this one loom large.
Veterans are set to report next week, and training camp will ramp up. Don’t be surprised if Jerome Ford and rookie Dylan Sampson carry much of the load with Judkins still absent. Pierre Strong is a guy that the Browns ideally keep on the practice squad, as he will battle for a spot during training camp.
Cleveland and fully guaranteed contracts—it’s almost like they’ve been at the center of that conversation a time or two before. Now, let’s see which way they fold.
