Cleveland Browns fans are getting some bad news that they won’t want to hear.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland Dot Com, backup RB Jerome Ford’s status for the week 1 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals is in doubt.

Ford suffered what head coach Kevin Stefanski is calling a hamstring injury on Monday during training camp session No. 11.

It is unfortunate news for the Browns and Ford. Cleveland seemed to be all-in on going with the second-year running back as their backup to Nick Chubb for the 2023 season. This news may delay that from happening just a bit.

Demetric Felton, John Kelly Jr., and Hassan Hall all showed flashes for the Browns in the preseason game against the New York Jets. But it’s doubtful that Cleveland will be rolling the offense out with one of them as the team’s backup.

Ford isn’t proven, as he only got eight carries as a rookie. Cleveland likes his ability to be a pass catcher out of the backfield and they believe he’s a good enough runner to supplement Chubb. Last year, he handled kickoff returns for the most part and grew to like it.

“I did grow to like it,” Ford said on Monday. “I liked it a lot. It was something to get me on the field, but it’s something also to help the team. But yeah, I think I liked it a lot and I hadn’t done it since I was in high school. I didn’t return kicks in college, but, yeah, I think it was fun to do.”

Cleveland may soon be looking at the free agency market for a backup running back. It won’t be a reunion with Kareem Hunt, though, as he’s expected to be heading south.
