The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine is wrapping up and plenty was learned about prospects that’ll soon be drafted next month.
For some teams, the combine is there to check off what you see on tape. Sometimes, players may not test as well and it’ll send you back to the tape to see if you missed anything.
Specifically, the wide receiver class tested very well and while a couple of players now may be out of reach for the Browns, it should solidify others being there.
Browns need to take WR Xavier Legette in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft
After a great performance at the combine, Legette should be locked into the second round as the floor. The South Carolina product’s relative athletic score was elite and he tested well across the board.
Legette ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and added a 40-inch vertical to show off his explosiveness. The same player who is a big play waiting to happen on film showed up to the combine.
In 2023, Legette broke out for the Gamecocks with 1,355 yards. In the previous four seasons, he did not break 200 yards. The latest production is worrisome but everything is there on the senior tape to see that he is a bonafide ball-player.
Why do the Browns draft Xavier Legette?
Amari Cooper isn’t getting any younger and while the Browns may extend him, he’s only under contract through next season right now. The same can be said about Elijah Moore’s contract, which will come to an end following next season.
Lately, the Browns haven’t been able to hit on any heavy contributors at the wide receiver position in the draft. The bounty is still out on David Bell and Cedric Tillman, other than that Donovan Peoples-Jones was the best find in recent years and he was in the sixth round.
If Cleveland has to make a slight trade up for Legette, I would do it without a second guess.
Continuing to evolve the wideout room is what Cleveland needs to do no matter what. Adding a playmaker like Legette would be too good to pass up.
Final word
Good teams build the rough the draft and develop their players. The early part of the draft is the prime spot to find who you can best do that with. Legette in a Browns’ uniform would give them the opportunity to complete that task.
Former top pick of the Browns is in the news for being a local hero
