Cleveland Browns were faced with no choice but to bring in another cornerback to the room following a serious injury in the Pro Football Hall of Fame preseason game.
Not one, but two players were hurt in the matchup with the Jets. Any time that multiple players go down in a single game, it’s a catastrophe.
Yesterday, head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that second-year cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. would be down for the long haul with an ankle injury, the same for Daylen Baldwin (hamstring). Subsequently, later in the day, the Browns waived Graham with an injury designation. Stefanski said that the team would be bringing in more at the position.
Today, the team announced that they have signed cornerback Gavin Heslop. A second-year man as well, Heslop played his college football at Stony Brook before signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft.
Heslop has appeared in three career games and spent the majority of his career on the practice squads of the Seahawks (2020-21) and the Carolina Panthers (2022).
Graham had appeared in seven games with the Browns last season after coming up from the practice squad and had an outside shot at making the roster. Heslop will be another camp body at the very least, and perhaps a guy they want to get to the practice squad if he earns it.
Heslop is a 6-foot-1 defensive back that weighs about 200 pounds. He is 25 years old, so if he wants to embark on an NFL career, now is the time.
