The Cleveland Browns remain active in free agency and are signing one of the best free agents still available.
Per Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, Cleveland is set to sign former Chicago Bears guard Teven Jenkins.
Terms of the deal are unavailable at this time, but for how long Jenkins lasted on the market, it may not be a very lucrative contract for Cleveland to be agreeing to.
Jenkins was a second-round pick by the Bears back in 2021 and started 38 games in his time there. He's mostly played left guard, which was the position he started 14 games at last year.
Chicago made a strong effort to improve its interior offensive line by trading for Jonah Jackson and Joe Thuney to play right and left guard, respectively, and signing Drew Dalman at center. Jenkins was left to survey his options on the market, which included the New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, and an AFC North club in the Cincinnati Bengals.
The reason why Jenkins was available for over a week mostly has to do with his injury history. Jenkins may've started 38 games over the last four years but he hasn't finished that many. Teams were concerned about his durability when he was coming out of college four years ago, which is why he fell to the second round in the draft.
Teven Jenkins seemed primed to hit free agency long before the Bears added two new guards via recent trades. During his four years in Chicago, Jenkins missed 23 games due to injuries, mostly soft issue problems. He worked hard last offseason changing his diet and regime but still missed time in 2024 due to a lingering calf injury. That frustrated Bears GM Ryan Poles, who had no ties to the former 2021 second-round pick to begin with. Regardless, when Jenkins is healthy, he has the potential to have a Pro Bowl impact for another team, the only concern is actually keeping him on the field. Jenkins is still relatively young (just turned 27-years-old) and has the ability to play either guard position at a solid level when healthy and surrounded by a good, competent offensive linemen beside him. – A to Z Sports Chicago staff writer Kole Noble
Now that he's coming to the Browns, his new team may not even have to rely on him as a starter.
The likely plan with Teven Jenkins in Cleveland
The Browns are pretty much set at the two positions Jenkins has the most NFL experience at. Joel Bitonio is coming back at left guard and Wyatt Teller is still holding down the right guard spot. Teller's $1 million roster bonus for this year became guaranteed on March 15, so it's unlikely for the Browns to move on from him now.
Jenkins would fill in as a backup at both guard spots, or he could go back to offensive tackle, where he played in college at Oklahoma State.
Jack Conklin is back in the fold at right tackle, so a chance to start there isn't in the cards. Cleveland's starting left tackle, Dawand Jones, had arthroscopic knee surgery for a fracture he suffered back in November. There could be a window of opportunity for Jenkins to start over the Browns' fourth-round pick from the 2023 draft.
Whatever Cleveland ends up doing with Jenkins, he's a talented player when healthy and is still just 27 years old with history at multiple positions. This is a quality signing to make at this stage in free agency.
