Injuries force the Browns to bring back a familiar face into the quarterback mix by the way of a veteran free agent signing
The Browns have an addition that is a bit surprising but familiar at the same time.
Monday has been a busy one for the Cleveland Browns to start the week.
After making multiple roster moves earlier in the day, the Browns are now adding a veteran quarterback to their roster.
With several injuries already piling up in the quarterback room, Cleveland is turning to a familiar face to add some depth—for now.
Cleveland Browns signing Tyler Huntley ahead of first preseason game vs. Carolina Panthers
That’s right. The Browns are bringing back Tyler Huntley, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Kenny Pickett is dealing with a nagging injury that cropped up early in camp, rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel is nursing a hamstring issue, and Shedeur Sanders missed time last week due to arm soreness.
At this point in training camp, the Browns’ healthiest quarterback is Joe Flacco—something few would have predicted. It’s unlikely that Flacco plays in the first preseason game, and he may sit out more than one. Fortunately, Cleveland will have a chance to get valuable reps this week during joint practices with the Panthers in a controlled environment.
Huntley brings five years of NFL experience and previously spent the preseason with the Browns last year, including time on the practice squad. The 27-year-old quarterback made five starts for the Miami Dolphins last season, throwing for 829 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
The original plan was for the Browns to avoid signing another quarterback, but with three players in the room battling injuries, this move became necessary. Expect Huntley to suit up for Cleveland in their first preseason game—possibly turning it into an audition for other teams once his stint in Cleveland wraps up. Again.
