Cleveland Browns have made a move ahead of today’s deadline to get down to 53 players which may surprise some people.

Breakout preseason star Austin Watkins Jr. was waived, first reported by Adam Schefter. Watkins led the NFL in receiving yards this preseason.

Watkins had 257 receiving yards and two touchdowns this preseason. Many believed that Watkins had a chance to make the Browns’ roster if they elected to keep seven receivers. One source tells AtoZ that the Browns feel good about their chances of getting him to the practice squad.

After not being on the team the first day of training camp, Browns signed the USFL product and he turned heads all training camp. But Watkins never repped with the starters and played against backups in each preseason game, so the writing was on the wall.

When rosters are good, and yes the Browns have a good one, it is hard to keep around everyone. If the Browns can get him to the practice squad they would be delighted.

Keep track of all of the roster cuts here as the team works toward 53 players ahead of the 4 p.m. deadline.
