David Njoku is responding from a pretty pedestrian Week 11 effort against the Pittsburgh Steelers the only way he knows how: the JUGS machine.
In the Cleveland Browns' 13-10 win, Njoku led the way with 15 targets. But that didn't result in big numbers throughout the air because drops held him back. In the end, he caught seven passes for 56 yards.
He described the performance as unacceptable. And in the days since the Browns' critical win, Njoku has gone to the JUGS machine to make sure those drops don't happen again.
Recently, on Monday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Njoku wasted no time hitting the machines. He apparently FaceTimed the coach to show him he was working to ensure the drops didn't happen again.
"I can confirm he hit the JUGS machine because he FaceTimed me from his house on the JUGS machine," Stefanski said. "Yeah, we have a ton of confidence in Dave. We’re going to continue to throw him the ball. He comes through for us. Obviously, he’s hard on himself. That was a pretty big 11-yard gain there at the end, so we’re always going to go to Dave.”
Njoku has a history of interesting antics following losses. He also has a history of being tough on himself. It is because of the talent he possesses. Realistically, Njoku could be one of the best tight ends in the league. However, it will come down to mitigating games like Sunday.
Extra sessions on the JUGS machine could definitely serve as a remedy. Besides, he did have the catch that helped set up the game-winning field goal when Sunday's affair hung in the balance. That may be good enough for now.
"Dave’s (Njoku) going to make a bunch of plays this year, same with Elijah (Moore) and all those guys," quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson said after his first career win. "So I have no choice but to get the ball out of my hands and get it in their hands because they’re special playmakers.”
