The NFL draft is inching closer and closer and we’re just over two weeks from the Cleveland Browns making their first selection in the first round since the 2021 NFL Draft.
Each week as the draft inches closer, the Browns are connected to a prospect that folks expect them to select at No. 2 overall. Early on, people thought it would be Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders for Cleveland. Then, it was Penn State DE Abdul Carter and he remains in the mix.
As of late, a new name has taken over as the expectation at No. 2 overall. Colorado held their Pro Day last week and it strengthened the case.
Belief around the league is that the Browns will be taking Colorado’s Travis Hunter
According to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, there is growing belief around the NFL that the Browns will be taking Travis Hunter at the No. 2 pick. Tennessee is widely expected to take Miami QB Cam Ward, so Cleveland holds the keys to really getting the draft started.
“In fact, there’s a growing belief around the league that Hunter is the favorite to go to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 2 pick, according to high-ranking executives and coaches. The Browns have been high on Hunter throughout the process, according to sources. And as he went through his route tree Friday during warmups, Browns general manager Andrew Berry watched intently from 10 yards away.” — Jeff Howe, The Athletic
The Browns view Hunter as a wide receiver first and foremost. It is unknown if the team will decide to play him on the defensive side of the football too but they very well could. Cleveland playing Hunter full-time on offense and then throwing him on defense on third-and-long and in the red zone could be the move.
Hunter won the Heisman Trophy last year after putting up 1,258 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns on 96 catches. On the flip side, Hunter made 36 tackles and four interceptions on defense. It was a season that no one has really ever seen.
Cleveland’s offensive struggles last year tell the story that they need more premier talent on offense. Cleveland needs more players that can points on the board and that is what Hunter is. A player who can run with 4.3 speed and has ball skills unlike anyone else in the class.
Taking Hunter would be a smart pick for the Browns and it would give Andrew Berry a hit at the wide receiver position at last.
