The Cleveland Browns have been quiet on the opening day of free agency and their first move of the day comes via trade.

Cleveland has to bring in at least two quarterbacks this offseason and they just shipped off one of their own to land a quarterback.

In what is a puzzling move on a surface level, the Browns have traded QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for QB Kenny Pickett. The move was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Browns lit a draft pick on fire to replace a mediocre quarterback with a mediocre quarterback

Cleveland just wasted a fifth-round pick to make this move which is a big surprise. Pickett is a former AFC North quarterback who was drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh gave Pickett two years to become the guy for them and he was unable to prove he was the franchise quarterback.

Pittsburgh traded Pickett to the Eagles in March of last year and he was the backup to Jalen Hurts for the 2024 season. Pickett is coming off of a Super Bowl season with the Eagles where he completed 25-of-42 passes for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, Pickett has played in 30 career games and has a 15-14 touchdown to interception ratio during that time.

Pickett is a better quarterback than Thompson-Robinson, who the Browns have tried to mold into a quality backup the last couple of seasons. But it isn’t by a significant enough amount to warrant roving up a fifth-round pick.

A very puzzling move for the Browns and not one that fans will get behind. Pickett is going to have a great opportunity in front of him to play for the Browns in 2025, which probably says more about the franchise than anything.
