Cleveland Browns have filled a need that has been glaring for a while now via a trade with the New England Patriots.
The Browns shipped T Tyrone Wheatley Jr. to the Patriots for RB Pierre Strong Jr. Now, the expectation is that Strong will come in and be the Browns’ No. 3 running back behind Jerome Ford. But with Ford set to possibly miss time to begin the season, the chance for early snaps is there for Strong.
Cleveland and New England love making trades of players that won’t necessarily make their team but may help the other. Last season it was Cleveland sending Mack Wilson to New England for Chase Winovich, now they have another deal in place.
Strong comes in as a fourth-round pick of the Patriots in the 2022 NFL Draft. A former South Dakota State running back who had 10 totes for 100 yards as a rookie. Additionally, Strong caught seven passes for 42 yards. The ability to be a receiving back is there and that likely made him even more enticing to the Browns.
Cleveland traded Wheatley, a player who was not likely to make the team, though he was a potential player for the practice squad. The tight end turned tackle has had an excellent preseason but the Browns’ depth at tackle is deep. It’s the depth that allowed the Browns to make this trade.
Coming out of college, Strong ran a 4.37 40-yard dash, which is an excellent number for a running back. Overall, Strong is a very good athlete.
In what looked to be the final hole on the roster, the Browns have filled it with a young player to put behind Ford and Nick Chubb.
