Cleveland Browns have had what you can call a quarterback carousel over the last couple of decades. Even last year, they were faced with the task of playing five different starting quarterbacks due to injuries.

One of those guys was Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who had to step in and start three games for the Browns last year. Overall as a rookie fifth-round pick, DTR played in a total of five games and that is something that the Browns never envisioned happening.

With Deshaun Watson coming off of shoulder surgery, the Browns have four active quarterbacks on the roster. Jameis Winston figured to be the backup and Cleveland added Tyler Huntley as well.

Bleacher Report recently released a piece labeling 32 players around the league that should be traded before the season starts. Thompson-Robinson was the player labeled for the Browns.

"Thompson-Robinson will be hard-pressed to learn much from them from his spot on the practice squad—which is where he's headed. At this point the best thing for both player and team may well be another team expressing interest in an athletic young signal-caller with the potential to at least develop into a quality backup.” – Gary Davenport, Bleacher Report

The issue with this is that Andrew Berry just doesn’t give up on draft picks too early and after one season, that is what this would be. Last year we watched the Browns trade Joshua Dobbs after training camp and before the season, I see that being the plan for Huntley, or they could cut him.

DTR had some lows and some positive moments as a rookie, but he is a developmental piece for the Browns and they knew that when they selected him. Playing as a rookie unexpectedly shouldn’t change anything, as this was always a multi-year thing with DTR. If the Browns can groom him into being a top-level backup, it would be an ideal outcome for the later selection.

With Watson playing just 12 games over the last two seasons, the Browns have to be prepared for another quarterback to play. The hope is that in Year 3, Watson can be out there for every game and finally show why the Browns made an unprecedented trade for him.

Either way, I fully expect DTR to be on the roster in 2024. Cleveland loves his dual-threat skill set that fits the offense and giving up on him this early would be a wasted pick.
