Cleveland Browns had made another cut as they prepare to get down to 53 players ahead of next week’s deadline.

The Browns announced on Thursday that they have waived quarterback Kellen Mond, that is until they took him off waivers later in the day following a trade of Joshua Dobbs, per the wire. Mond is a player they claimed following last season’s training camp cuts from the Minnesota Vikings. Mond was inactive for all 17 games last season with Cleveland.

Additionally, the Browns have let defense end Charles Wiley go with the same designation.

Mond was a third-round selection of the Vikings on the 2021 draft and lasted one season in Minnesota.

Cleveland started Mond in the first preseason game and he played a shaky half where he threw a touchdown and interception. To this point, Mond has played a decent amount in all three preseason games. The Texas A&M product’s best showing came in the second exhibition against the Washington Commanders, where he went 7-for-12 for 79 yards.

It was never really going to be a competition for the Browns No. 3 quarterback spot this preseason. Cleveland drafted Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round of the draft back in April and he’s impressed this training camp. The Browns hope and believe that the rookie will be their long-term backup. Don’t rule out Mond ending up on the team’s practice squad.

Don’t be surprised to see Mond waived again and the Browns rolling into the season with two quarterbacks.
