Early in the preseason, the Cleveland Browns have a choice to make.
Second-year RB Jerome Ford’s immediate future is in doubt with a hamstring injury, so the Browns may need some reinforcements. Cleveland is set to have a workout with free agent RB Jordan Wilkins.
Wilkins is not one you would have thought the Browns would be interested in immediately when you take a look at available players. He’s a veteran back who’s entering his sixth season, having spent his career with the Indianapolis Colts outside of one game in Tennessee during the 2021 season.
Most recently, Wilkins appeared in four games during 2022 but didn’t have much opportunity. During that time, Wilkins had 13 carries for 58 yards and six catches for 29 yards.
Wilkins’ first three seasons from 2018-20 he got consistent touches within the Colts’ offense. Each of those seasons resulted in at least 50 totes and 300 rushing yards. Wilkins does have some ability as a pass catcher, he caught 12 passes for 105 yards in 2020.
At 6-foot-1 and 216 pounds, the former Ole Miss Rebel has pretty good size out of the backfield.
Cleveland has Demetric Felton, John Kelly Jr., and Hassan Hall on the roster this preseason, though they don’t look to be settling with those three. The expectation is that the Browns will bring in another body for the possibility of Ford’s injury carrying into the season.
