Cleveland Browns could potentially be looking to find a diamond in the rough with a pretty unknown player.
The Browns are reportedly working out XFL edge rusher/linebacker Charles Wiley, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston.
Wiley most recently played in the XFL, in which he appeared in seven games with the Houston Roughnecks this year. Wiley recorded a sack and six tackles with the Roughnecks.
There is slight NFL experience with Wiley, he spent some time with the Baltimore Ravens practice squad during the 2022 season.
Plenty of college experience comes along with this defender, having spent a total of six years between Ole Miss and UTSA. In 2019, Wiley had his best season with the Rebels when he recorded three sacks and 27 tackles in 12 games.
Wiley then transferred to UTSA where he got his first full dose of being a starter by starting 25 games over two seasons. Between those two seasons, the 25-year-old had 5.5 sacks and 79 tackles.
At 6-foot-2 and 251 pounds, Wiley can put his hand in the dirt in a 4-3 defense, or stand up in a 3-4 defense. With the Browns, he will be asked to rush the passer presumably.
A low-risk player that the Browns could look to see if there is anything they’re worth keeping around during the workout. If there is, look for the team to sign him and keep him on the practice squad when the season rolls around. If not, it was worth the look at the end of the day.
