Just when they had built some momentum in the series, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost it all—and may have just lost the series to the Indiana Pacers.
Cleveland now faces a 3–1 deficit after losing 129-109 to the Pacers, and it would take heroics rarely seen in NBA history to come back. It wasn’t just the loss in Game 4—it was how they lost: trailing by 41 points at halftime and down 32 heading into the fourth quarter.
After a crucial Game 3 win on the road, the Cavs folded on Sunday night in another must-win moment. Now, they’re staring at a steep uphill climb.
To make matters worse, Donovan Mitchell is dealing with an ankle injury ahead of Game 5.
Donovan Mitchell’s injury to watch for the Cleveland Cavaliers heading into Game 5
Mitchell was limited to just 20 minutes and was downgraded to doubtful after exiting with the injury. Mitchell didn’t return after halftime and it was announced during the third quarter that he was doubtful. The Cavs’ star scored only 12 points—just days after putting up 23 against the Pacers. Following the game, Kenny Atkinson revealed that Mitchell would have an MRI on his ankle where they’ll learn more about the injury. With his health now in question even if he plays, Cleveland’s hopes grow even dimmer.
The Cavaliers return home on Tuesday to host the Pacers for Game 5. It’s win or go home for the No. 1 seed—a spot they didn’t expect to be in at this point in the playoffs. Cleveland may have to try to do it without their star out there healthy.
