Kareem Hunt will play the Cleveland Browns for just the second time in his career on Sunday after spending the last five seasons with the Browns. Hunt last played Cleveland in 2018, and he did some damage that game with a hat trick of touchdowns in the win for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Flash forward six years and Hunt is returning to Cleveland as a member of the Chiefs once again. A lot has changed since then and Hunt was a key piece of Cleveland’s roster just last season when Nick Chubb went down. In his first game back against the Browns in his home state, Hunt is as excited as you would expect him to be.

“Definitely excited to see my family, see some of my close guys on the team,” Hunt said on Wednesday, via Harold Kuntz. “[I] definitely had a good time. Spent the last five years there so it is kind of different to be on the other side.”

Hunt played in 15 games for the Browns last year as their backup running back behind Jerome Ford when Chubb went down. The veteran running back recorded 411 rushing yards and a career-high nine rushing touchdowns. Even if he has lost a step at this point in his career, Hunt is still a problem to bring down. Hunt rushed for 2,285 yards in 64 career games with Cleveland and scored 25 touchdowns.

“Kareem is obviously a person and a player that I have a ton of respect for,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday. “He’s elite in short yardage, which we’ve seen firsthand. He’s elite in the screen game, which we’ve seen firsthand. He runs hard, he looks good.”

Cleveland didn’t bring back Hunt in free agency last cycle and opted to sign D’Onta Foreman. There are no bad feelings between the Browns or Hunt and it is just how it worked out. He’s now on a team that is chasing a third straight Super Bowl.

“There’s always roster decisions that get made for a variety of reasons, but it doesn’t change the fact that Kareem was a really important person, a really important part of this football team.”

Cleveland is 3-10 on the season and the Chiefs are 12-1. They are two teams that are on different paths at this point in the year. Still, Sunday’s game is expected to be a battle with the line being just -4.5 for the Chiefs. Hunt isn’t the only one returning to Northeast Ohio, as Cleveland native and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will be back in town as well.

“We always both go back there. It’s always going to be home for us. We’re just excited to go out there and get to play out there.”
