We are entering Week 5 of the NFL season and the Cleveland Browns appear to be at a crossroads already in their season thanks to a 1-3 start.

Cleveland has dropped games to the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders, that is two teams that they had zero business losing to.

The Browns’ offense has been amongst the worst in the league. They are 30th in total yards per game (276.5) and 26th in rushing yards per game (26th).

One bright spot for the Browns in the near future is that Nick Chubb will be returning after being sidelined for over a year. In Week 2 of last season, Chubb blew his knee out for the second time in his football career. A fan-favorite in Cleveland, when Chubb went down a huge part of the team went down. You could even say that Chubb was their identity, he was a large part of what they want to do on offense.

Chubb is a great player and the Browns hope that he can come back and be the same great player they last seen on the field. However, it is not fair to expect that from him.

Nick Chubb is not saving the Browns’ 2024 season

If Cleveland wants to get going on offense, which is the single biggest anchor to this team losing right now. They are going to need more than a productive Pro Bowl running back returning. Chubb is not returning to the same strong offensive line that he once ran upon. While they could be healthy following Chubb’s practice window, the Browns are currently without Wyatt Teller, Jedrick Wills Jr., and Jack Conklin.

When it comes to being a pure running back, Chubb may be the best in the NFL. His combination of strength, explosiveness, and speed are next to none when it comes to running backs. Before last season, Chubb ran for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons. In 2022, Chubb had a career-high 1,525 rushing yards.

A better run game would help the passing game, as it always does. Still, the Browns have to be better from the top town. Chubb being back won’t have an impact on the wide receivers dropping passes or blockers whiffing in pass protection.

The single best thing that the Browns can expect from Chubb being back is a big emotional boost for the locker room. It could carry out onto the field and help them win football games, but it all goes back to improving where they are currently bad.

Having Chubb back is going to be a big boost for the offense that will then allow Jerome Ford to be a complimentary piece. Expectations that the Georgia product is going to save the season are far-fetched and unrealistic. Cleveland has bigger problems to work on to turn things around.
