NFL teams have until this afternoon to trim their rosters down to 53 players. The Cleveland Browns have already made a flurry of moves over the past few days—and they aren’t done yet.

The biggest move so far was trading Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a fifth-round pick. On Tuesday, Cleveland made another notable decision, parting ways with a former Pro Bowler.

The Diontae Johnson experience is over in Cleveland

Cleveland signed Johnson back in April, the only team to show interest in the veteran wideout during free agency. After a strong start to his career and several productive seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnson’s 2024 campaign was a rough one. He bounced between three teams and finished with a career-low 375 receiving yards.

Johnson arrived in Cleveland needing to get back into shape, but once he did, he flashed at times in training camp. However, his momentum stalled during the first two preseason games when he struggled with drops on catchable passes.

The Browns opted to sign former Texas Longhorns receiver Isaiah Bond last week, and he appears locked into a roster spot. Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman, and Jamari Thrash are the other clear roster locks. Cleveland also likes what it has seen from undrafted rookie Gage Larvadain, who has a strong chance of making the roster as both a receiver and returner. Kaden Davis is another player who impressed throughout the preseason.

Johnson, a Pro Bowler in 2021, recorded 680-plus receiving yards in each of his first five seasons. Now, at 29, his NFL career appears to be at a crossroads.
