Cleveland Browns jump on adding another running back while Quinshon Judkins is still not with the team at this time
The Browns make an addition from the outside.
The Cleveland Browns finalized their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday as they gear up for the 2025 NFL season. But once that was complete, it quickly became clear the Browns weren’t done making moves.
Cleveland is expected to continue shuffling the roster this week, and they’ve already started. Holding the No. 2 spot on the waiver wire, the Browns have wasted no time taking advantage.
Browns claim former Los Angeles Chargers running back
Cleveland’s third running back — at least for now — will be former South Carolina standout Raheim Sanders, who spent the offseason with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent rookie. Cleveland claimed Sanders from L.A. along with defensive back Jarrick Bernard-Converse off waivers from the New York Jets.
The move comes as the Browns continue to deal with the absence of second-round pick and presumed starter Quinshon Judkins, who still has not signed his four-year rookie contract. Although Judkins’ domestic violence charge was no-billed in Florida, no progress has been made on a deal. Each day without movement makes it increasingly unlikely he’ll be on the field for Week 1, and the NFL is still conducting its own investigation.
Cleveland parted ways with Pierre Strong on cutdown day and kept only Jerome Ford and rookie Dylan Sampson on the initial 53-man roster. In a perfect scenario, Judkins and Sampson are the future of the position, with Ford entering a contract year.
Adding Sanders, a 6-foot, 230-pound back with explosiveness, gives Cleveland an immediate depth option. He scored two touchdowns in the preseason with the Chargers, rushing 13 times for 48 yards against the 49ers and 10 times for 42 yards against the Saints. Sanders had a standout 2022 season at Arkansas where he ran for 1,443 yards and 10 touchdowns. After just six games in 2023, he transferred to South Carolina in 2024 and had 881 rushing yards for Gamecocks.
The Browns will eventually face a decision once Judkins returns, but for now, Sanders joins the running back room as the team prepares to open the season.
