Cleveland Browns tried to add an intriguing defender and another NFL team stood in the way
The Browns could have had another addition but one AFC team stopped it.
The Cleveland Browns have had a busy few days building toward the 2025 season. They finalized their initial 53-man roster and have since made a couple of additional moves.
Cleveland claimed former Los Angeles Chargers running back Raheem Sanders and former New York Jets cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse off the waiver wire.
On Tuesday, the Browns were awarded those two players, though they attempted to add another but came up short.
Tennessee Titans blocked the Browns from adding another defender
According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Browns put in a claim for former Indianapolis Colts cornerback Samuel Womack. However, Womack was awarded to the Tennessee Titans—the only team ahead of Cleveland in the waiver order.
Womack, a fifth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Toledo, spent two seasons in San Francisco as a depth piece before landing with the Colts. In 2024, he started eight of 17 games, finishing with 36 tackles and two interceptions.
The Browns have Denzel Ward and Greg Newsome II set as their top two outside cornerbacks. The slot position looks to be a competition between Myles Harden and Cameron Mitchell to open the season. Womack, meanwhile, would have likely slotted in as a boundary corner, where he has spent the majority of his three-year NFL career.
Instead, the Browns added Bernard-Converse, who has played primarily on special teams, logging just nine defensive snaps between free safety and outside cornerback. Cleveland’s strong interest in Womack makes it worth keeping an eye on him if he becomes available again.
