Former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback raises fair question with the Browns after their decision that had Shedeur Sanders visibly bothered
Everyone was wondering what was going on at the time.
The Cleveland Browns wrapped up a perfect 3-0 preseason with a 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams. It was the first extended look at most of the starters this preseason, and Week 1 starter Joe Flacco delivered, tossing a touchdown pass to rookie Harold Fannin Jr.
Cleveland rotated through four quarterbacks. Dillon Gabriel relieved Flacco after a couple of series and played the rest of the first half. Shedeur Sanders took over much of the second half but was not on the field when the Browns got the ball back, down one point with 2:03 remaining. Instead, Tyler Huntley handled the final drive.
Derek Carr questions Browns’ decision with Shedeur Sanders
Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr took to X to question why the Browns didn’t allow Sanders to run the two-minute drill late in the game.
“I need to understand why we don’t get to see [Shedeur Sanders] run this 2-minute drill? Wouldn’t you want to see your young QB operate in this situation? Get him more reps for the future? I didn’t see the whole game so maybe he already showed enough? Help me understand this.”
Sanders struggled behind Cleveland’s second- and third-string offensive lines, taking five sacks while completing just 3-of-6 passes for 14 yards. Some of the sacks were the result of poor blocking, while others came from Sanders holding onto the ball too long. The rookie was visibly frustrated about not returning for the final drive, though that appeared to stem from his competitive nature.
The offense sputtered in the second half as the Rams’ defensive front consistently won at the line of scrimmage. After a promising debut against the Carolina Panthers in the preseason opener, Sanders took a clear step back in this outing.
Now, there’s no telling when Sanders will next see the field. With roster cuts looming as Cleveland trims to 53 players, the rookie from Colorado is likely to begin the regular season as the Browns’ No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart.
