Cleveland Browns have a glaring need at the most important position in sports and that is the quarterback. Owner Jimmy Haslam recently admitted what everyone knew about the Deshaun Watson trade, it was a swing and miss.
“We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun,” Haslam said recently. “We thought we had the quarterback, we didn't, and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we've got to dig ourselves out of that hole. (The trade) was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee and I, so hold us accountable.”
Cleveland still has Watson under contract for at least the 2035 season, then they may decide to eat the dead money remaining on his contract. Now, Watson’s latest Instagram post looks a bit like he’s got a message for the doubters.
Browns’ Deshaun Watson sends a strong message to the doubters
“Everyone’s doubting me. Everyone don’t believe in me," Watson said. "Everyone don’t think that I can get back to where I was. I know and I believe the work that I put in, what I believe in myself, the peace that I’ve been channeling these last couple months. I know I’m going to be way better than before."
The Browns shipped three first-round picks and more to the Texans for Watson. Cleveland thought they had their starting quarterback but that has turned out to not be the case. In three seasons with the Browns, Watson has played in just 17 games and has 3,365 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions during that time.
Midseason last year, Watson suffered an Achilles injury that ended his season. The Achilles was re-injured and Watson is likely on the shelf for the 2025 season.
Cleveland made a move for Kenny Pickett early in the offseason and he’ll have a chance to compete for the job. The Browns could still bring in another veteran quarterback and they’re sure to draft one in hopes of developing him into a starter.
Watson is clearly training for a comeback and he hopes to get on the field again. It just may not be with the Browns when that time comes.
