The NFL offseason is cruising along and mandatory minicamp is already here for the Cleveland Browns this week.
We have gotten through the thick of free agency and through the NFL Draft where the Browns made five selections. Now, three days of minicamp will be followed by over a month off, then it is onto training camp.
With the mandatory days here, there is no better time to preview who to watch during these three days. In a two-part series, we start with the offense.
QB Deshaun Watson
After having surgery on a fractured shoulder last season, Watson is ramping up his throwing according to a plan put in place by his doctors. Through voluntary minicamp, Watson was throwing every other day and when he wasn’t throwing, he was taking mental reps off to the side.
After his first two seasons in Cleveland, there is a lot to be desired from Watson. Every throw he makes in minicamp is going to be closely watched and any that are off the mark will be heavily scrutinized. That is just how it goes.
It is going to be interesting to see if the Browns stick to the same plan they had during the voluntary days, or if Watson throws all three days. Either way, Watson is going to be full-go in training camp and the expectations for him to be the guy the Browns thought they traded for are very much there.
WR Jerry Jeudy
Cleveland’s new weapon is going to be one to keep an eye on. The Browns had been interested in Jeudy for a couple of years and finally pulled off the trade to get him. Now, it is all about earning the right to be the second wide receiver option.
Jeudy will compete for that right with wide receiver Elijah Moore, who had some good moments last season but also left a lot to be desired. With Jeudy’s route running ability and niche to get open, these June days are ones that he could very well stand out.
OT Dawand Jones
Cleveland had no idea that Jones would be a major contributor for them last season but that is how it worked out with Jack Conklin being lost for the season in the very first game.
Jones stepped in and started Cleveland and held his own against the likes of Nick Bosa and T.J. Watt. The talented tackle showed he belongs and is a Day 1 starter as a rookie.
The issue now is that the Browns have three starting-caliber tackles in Jedrick Wills Jr. and Conklin joining Jones. I believe the Browns should keep the idea open of playing Jones at left tackle if Wills struggles early. Either way, health has been a major factor as of late in Cleveland for their offensive tackles and Jones has to be ready for whatever.

The Browns have made some roster moves.
