Dillon Gabriel sets the record straight after some tried to twist his words into a shot at fellow Browns QB Shedeur Sanders
Gabriel has to straighten this out and he did.
The Cleveland Browns are now 2-0 in the preseason after picking up their second win, this one coming against the Philadelphia Eagles. The matchup provided the Browns with another valuable opportunity to evaluate their third-round pick in live game action.
Dillon Gabriel turned in a solid first-half performance, completing 13 of 18 passes for 141 yards. He did throw a pick-six, though head coach Kevin Stefanski noted the blame wasn’t solely on Gabriel, pointing out receiver error as a factor. Still, it was a throw Gabriel likely should not have made.
After Cleveland’s 22-13 win, Gabriel drew attention with a quote that quickly made the rounds on social media:
“There’s entertainers and there’s competitors. And I totally understand that, and my job is to compete. And that’s what I’m focused on doing.”
The comment went viral, with many major NFL-related accounts sharing it. Some tried to interpret it as a subtle shot at Gabriel’s rookie teammate, Shedeur Sanders. However, Gabriel clarified after the game that this was not the case.
“All of you in this room are entertainers. You have a job to do and I respect it, right? I’m a competitor, so I have a job to do as well,” Gabriel explained. “Just understanding that—that’s how I’ve lived, and I’ve said that multiple times.”
Even so, many outlets ignored the context of the original question, choosing instead to push the quote in a way that would generate clicks and views. While that strategy may drive engagement, it did not fairly represent Gabriel’s intent.
Both Gabriel and Sanders have carried themselves as professionals since arriving in Cleveland, and each has looked sharp in limited preseason action. The Browns are expected to name Joe Flacco as their starter this week, but the rookies will eventually get their opportunities. When that time comes, both will need to stay ready.
