The Cleveland Cavaliers had a night to forget in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Sunday evening against the Indiana Pacers.
After sweeping the Miami Heat in four games, the Cavs suffered a 121–112 loss to the Pacers to open the second round. It may have been the wake up call Cleveland needed to open the round, or a bad sign of what is to come.
Cleveland shot just 9-of-38 from three-point range, while the Pacers were red-hot, hitting 19-of-36 from deep. It was an uncharacteristic performance for the Cavs, who were playing their second straight game without point guard Darius Garland.
“The Cavs, quietly, were concerned about the Pacers for the last month or so,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on Monday. “That’s a tough matchup for them. As the Pacers were thriving at the end of the season, there was a race for 4-5-6 in the East. Then the Pacers went 14-4 down the stretch and took it. The Cavs were kind of giving them the side eye.”
Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 33 points but struggled from beyond the arc, going just 1-of-11. Evan Mobley contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Ty Jerome added 21 points off the bench. While the Cavs are hoping to get Garland back soon, they also have to monitor the status of De’Andre Hunter, who dislocated a finger in Game 1.
Game 1 highlighted one thing most importantly between the two teams: the Pacers couldn’t seem to miss, while the Cavs struggled to hit shots. Cleveland can’t afford to drop another game at home and will look to even the series Tuesday evening against Indiana. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
