Sometimes in the NFL things can work in ways that you’d never expect. If three years ago someone told you that Baker Mayfield won a playoff game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The former Browns’ gun slinger is set to be a free agent but many believe that he will end up returning to the Buccaneers. News broke today that Tampa Bay will interview former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for their opening.

Cleveland decided to move on from Van Pelt after the 2023 season. They’ve hired Ken Dorsey to take his spot on the offensive staff and that happened yesterday.

From 2020-2023, Van Pelt served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator in Cleveland. He worked with Mayfield closely in 2020 and 2021.

This move comes about after the Buccaneers lost their offensive coordinator Dave Canales to be the next head coach of the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield has worked with far too many head coaches and play callers in his six-year career in the NFL. If Van Pelt is hired, it is the Bucs giving him some familiarity to try to build off of a positive season.

Before long, it appears that the former coordinator could be back in the NFL after a short time off. He didn’t call plays in Cleveland but should be on track to in Tampa Bay if he does end up getting the job.
