The Cleveland Browns finally got rookie running back Quinshon Judkins under contract last weekend, and he returned to practice this week. After meeting with the NFL, the former Ohio State star practiced for the first time since OTAs on Thursday and was back on the field again Friday. It was a crucial step for Judkins, who had been charged with domestic violence late in the summer but later had the case no-billed in Florida courts.
Cleveland has listed Judkins as questionable against the Baltimore Ravens, which makes sense given he’s had just two practices. On Friday, he spoke with the media for the first time this season and was candid about his time away from the team. If he does suit up on Sunday, it’ll be a testament to the work he put in to stay in shape while sidelined.
Judkins on his time away from the Browns in August and early September
“Same thing that I would have been doing, close to it, if I were here,” Judkins said. “Just training, staying focused, a lot of working out, in my playbook, in my pads. Different things of that nature, staying focused.”
The biggest concern during Judkins’ absence was whether he’d return in game-ready condition. With just two practices under his belt, it’s at least encouraging that he has a chance to play against Baltimore. The Browns could certainly use his powerful running style. Cleveland managed just 49 rushing yards in Week 1 — a disappointing start in an area they emphasized improving.
Rookie Dylan Sampson led the way with 29 yards on 12 carries (2.4 yards per attempt), though he made an impact as a receiver with eight catches for 64 yards. Once both rookies get going, the Browns could have a dynamic one-two punch in the backfield.
The Browns travel to Baltimore for a tough matchup against the Ravens on Sunday at 1 p.m., needing to bounce back after their narrow Week 1 loss. Even if Judkins plays only a limited role, his presence could provide a significant boost for Cleveland.
