NFL insider revealed Cleveland Browns could pull out unexpected move in head coaching search following a set back
The Cleveland Browns are still in search of a head coach and it likely isn’t going to end until next week.
The Cleveland Browns moved on from Kevin Stefanski nearly three weeks ago, and they still aren’t very close on naming a new head man.
Cleveland has interviewed numerous candidates to replace Kevin Stefanski, including defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz twice. Cleveland is also set to have second interviews with Jaguars OC Grant Udinski and Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.
The interview with Scheelhaase can’t happen until after Sunday’s NFC Championship game, and that’s important because Scheelhaase is one part of satisfying the Rooney Rule.
New Browns head coaching search development connects them to the college football ranks
Even when the Browns do interview Scheelhaase in person, they’ll still need to interview one other candidate with a diverse background. Mike McDaniel canceling an interview with the Browns took away one possible way to satisfy the Rooney Rule and, in return, was a setback.
Cleveland may just look to the college level for the coaching search because of it.
“There has to be at least one other person, right, at least for them to even be compliant with this Rooney Rule,” CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones stated. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we ultimately see them interview someone from the college ranks, perhaps in order to ultimately get compliant with this rule.”
Tuesday is the earliest that Cleveland can get Scheelhaase in next week, so that’s likely the earliest Cleveland has a new hire. Between now and then, the Browns can, should, and likely will bring in another candidate with a diverse background.
Schwartz, Udinski, and Scheelhaase are all in the mix to be the next head coach. With how this search has gone, there are still things to sort through, and the Browns’ coaching search is likely to take close to a month as a result.
