‘They liked what they saw’ – Browns insider reveals key update on Cleveland QB Deshaun Watson and a possible return
An update on where Watson stands at this time.
The Cleveland Browns carried five healthy quarterbacks for much of training camp. They parted ways with Tyler Huntley on cutdown day and traded Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders.
Joe Flacco is set to start the season for the Browns, with rookie Dillon Gabriel serving as his backup. Shedeur Sanders is currently listed as the team’s No. 3 quarterback.
Then there’s Deshaun Watson, who is working his way back from an Achilles injury that he later re-injured. While he’s currently on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, he’ll be eligible to return after four games.
“He’s coming along. I do know that Jimmy Haslam, Andrew Berry, and Kevin Stefanski all kind of stood and watched one of those workouts of Deshaun Watson the other day,” Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot said on 92.3 The Fan on Thursday morning. “They liked what they saw from him. They were very encouraged about what’s happening with him from a health standpoint. He looks good—you would never know that he had Achilles surgery in January.”
Watson made seven starts last season before the injury and went 1-6 as the starter. He threw five touchdowns against three interceptions while averaging just 163 passing yards per game. Overall in Cleveland, Watson has thrown for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 19 starts. The Browns have gone 9-10 in those games.
“Once you start getting into late October, they’re going to have to make a decision on Deshaun Watson. Do they think about activating him, or does he remain on PUP for the rest of the season?” Cabot explained.
Cleveland’s recent moves suggest they’ve moved on from Watson, but he remains on the roster because of his fully guaranteed contract. He is under contract for the next two seasons and is currently scheduled to carry a cap hit of more than $116 million in each of those years.
