Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals have the making to be a great football game in Week 1 of the NFL season. This one could mean more to some players specifically.
Greg Newsome II has some extra motivation when going up against the Bengals and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase specifically. Newsome hasn’t forgotten the comment that Chase made, saying that Newsome was not ‘elite’.
“It’s game-time when we see them,” Chase said last summer before the 2022 season. “It’s just on sight, that’s it. Not just because Cleveland talk the most s—. Denzel Ward did his thing. Same for Greg Newsome. I don’t think he elite (Newsome), but they just talk crazy.”
Newsome signaled on Thursday that he keeps ‘receipts’ of things like that in the back of his mind. The Browns’ cornerback aims to have a good game and prove he is indeed a very good corner.
“We’re all competitors. When you get a matchup like this early on you’re just super excited,” Newsome said on Thursday.
Newsome likely won’t match up with Chase the majority of the time if Ward clears concussion protocol and is able to play. But there will be times when the third-year cornerback is the opposite of Chase.
The Northwestern product played in 15 games last season but spent a ton of time in the slot. He’s still going to see time there in 2023 but he’s going to get time on the outside as well, where he is strongest at.
In Week 1 the Bengals and Browns were going to be an entertaining one already, here is just another thing to watch out for.
Browns to honor the late Jim Brown at Cleveland Browns Stadium
Just one way the Browns will honor the all-time great.
