Aside from his heroics for the Cleveland Browns in the 2023 season, Joe Flacco is a man of unending class.
Recently, Flacco was nominated for the AP Comeback Player of the Year award, along with names like Buffalo Bills cornerback Damar Hamlin and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. Despite the nomination, Flacco conceded the award to the others, claiming that all he would be coming back from was being nearly retired.
"I don't necessarily know what I'm coming back from," Flacco told Zach Gelb of CBS Sports radio. "I would say most of the guys on that list I'm not sure what we're coming back from so that's probably my initial reaction. But I think any time that you're getting recognized in this league for playing well, I guess, it can be flattering.
"So it's a cool group to be a part of that's for sure. But yeah, that's my initial thought is, I'm just coming back from, what, being old and not being on a team for a couple months?"
Flacco went 4-1 in his run as the Browns' starter. His play pushed the Browns to the NFL playoffs when all looked lost. Still, he doesn't consider that enough to win the award. In his mind, Hamlin getting back on the field for the 2023 season is far more impressive than coming off the couch to become a starting quarterback.
To get yourself back to the point where you feel comfortable doing that kind of thing," Flacco said. "Obviously, the physical parts, you don't need any explanation there. But I think mentally to get yourself ready to go back out there and feel good doing what we do, especially at his position, is pretty cool."
Flacco was nominated alongside Mayfield, Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa, Hamlin and Los Angeles Rams Matthew Stafford.
