With Joe Flacco at quarterback, the Cleveland Browns are always prone to some interceptions simply because he isn’t afraid to spread the football around. In Week 1 of the NFL season during the loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Flacco threw two interceptions, and while they hurt, they weren’t entirely on him. The veteran delivered a low pass that Jerry Jeudy tried to dig out, but it popped up into the air. The second came in the second half on a ball to Cedric Tillman that still smacked him squarely in the hands.

The end result was two interceptions on passes that hit Browns wideouts. Jeudy’s was a tougher catch, but Tillman had no excuse for not securing his. Flacco, however, handled the turnovers like a seasoned veteran should.

Joe Flacco showed his leadership after Browns’ loss to Bengals

“You know, I’m wishing that I had the ball a little bit better and maybe I’m wishing I just threw it on his chest as opposed to doing what I did,” Flacco said after the game. “And I think we’re all looking at those plays and probably thinking about them. We’re going to have to go home tonight and try to fall asleep with those thoughts, and it’s hard.

“Listen, when you lose football games, that’s what happens. You’re going to have plays you look back on and think about. But those guys, they played a really strong game for us today. Like I said, when you look at this film, you’re going to see a lot of guys that did a lot of really good things.”

Rather than place blame, Flacco took the high road and showed what it means to be a good teammate. He finished 31-of-45 for 290 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions—a performance good enough to win. Instead, two missed kicks became the difference, keeping the conversation from being about Cleveland’s promising rookie playmakers. The Browns fell by a score of 17-16.

Jeudy led the team with 66 receiving yards on five catches, but a rookie running back was right behind him with eight receptions for 64 yards. Rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. chipped in seven catches for 63 yards, giving the Browns two rookies topping 60 receiving yards in Week 1. The run game never found a rhythm, but the offense still managed to move the ball effectively.

Ultimately, miscues cost Cleveland a season-opening win. Now, they’ll face the Baltimore Ravens next. Flacco will get another start, but the challenge will be greater against a tougher opponent. If the Browns hope to pull off the upset, they can’t afford to shoot themselves in the foot the way they did in Week 1.
