The Cleveland Browns have a developing story that could very well hurt them pretty badly in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Safety Juan Thornhill is not practicing for the second straight day in Berea, as he deals with a calf injury.

After being limited on Wednesday, it is now back-to-back days that Thornhill is unable to go. It’s not a good sign for his availability in what will be his regular season debut with the Browns.

Thornhill is going to be a significant part of the Browns’ secondary, hints at why they went out and signed him to a three-year deal worth $21 million. Against the Kansas City Chiefs in the final preseason game, Thornhill took back a pick-six against his old team. That was just a glimpse of what he can bring to this defense. Cleveland hopes he’s a step up from John Johnson III, who they cut this past offseason.

For now, there is no official word on Thornhill’s availability. But the Browns may not rush him back and choose to go the safe route. In good news for the Browns, they’ll have veteran safety Rodney McLeod ready to step up.

McLeod is a very capable player who is going to play a lot of snaps for this team whether he is starting or not. Also, McLeod brings familiarity with Jim Schwartz’s defense to the table from the time the two spent together in Philadelphia.

It looks like Browns fans may have to wait a week to see No. 1 out there. Against a pass attack that the Bengals deploy, losing any secondary player is tough.
