Hunt’s play declined last season when he saw his yard per carry drop to a career-low of 3.8. It was a swift fall from the previous season when he ran the ball at a 4.9 clip. It’s the main reason he sits out there still as a veteran back.
Some teams could still be shy about signing Hunt due to his history with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs cut hunt back in late 2018 after a video surfaced of him assaulting a woman. The University of Toledo product hasn’t been in trouble since outside of a small amount of marijuana being found on him in early 2020.
Hunt has gone over 500 rushing yards once since 2018 and that was in 2020 when Nick Chubb missed some time. Of course that plays into it, him playing behind Chubb, but he’s a guy that peaked really early.
New Orleans needs running back depth with Alvin Kamara suspended for the first three games and Eno Benjamin being placed on the injured reserve. The Saints are rolling with their free agency signee Jamaal Williams and rookie Kendre Miller for the time being.
Signing Hunt could give the team a capable No. 2 back for a few short games. If Hunt can return to his level of play pre-2022, he’s a pretty solid No. 2 option. The potential of him signing is sort of cloudy when you think about his role after week 3.
When Kamara returns, Hunt will be the No. 3 back at best. Perhaps, that’s where he is at this point in his career but he may not agree with that. Outside of some talk with the Washington Commanders, there hasn’t been a whole lot of interest in Hunt since he became a free agent.
All in all, Hunt may have to take any opportunity that comes his way at this point. He could wait it out longer as some unfortunate injuries will surely come about around the NFL but other veteran running backs are still out there, too. Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott are in the same boat that Hunt is.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Hunt signs with the Saints. His role for the first three weeks is pretty clear — I have questions on what exactly he will do for them following Kamara's return.
