Cleveland Browns’ recent trade has to have them smiling after they beat the Dolphins in Week 7
Browns have to be thrilled with the defender they recently acquired.
After losing three straight games and struggling to find much offense during that stretch, the Cleveland Browns badly needed the result they got in Week 7 of the NFL season. Cleveland returned home for the first time in over a month on Sunday and dismantled the Miami Dolphins in a 31-6 win.
It was the first time this season that the Browns scored more than 20 points, and their defense backed them up like it usually does.
This Week 7 matchup was always viewed as one where the Browns could potentially get back on track offensively. They did just that, and it resulted in their best overall performance of the season. Feelings in Cleveland weren’t great heading into this game — the team had recently made a pair of trades sending players elsewhere, and some took that as a sign that the Browns were already waving the white flag.
However, Cleveland’s trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars has to have them smiling now.
Tyson Campbell makes first big impact with the Browns against the Dolphins
Cleveland’s defense held Miami to 229 total yards on Sunday, with a good part of it coming in garbage time, and bodies were flying all over the field for the Browns. The decision to send Greg Newsome and a draft pick to Jacksonville for cornerback Tyson Campbell already looks like an early win.
Cleveland led 17-6 at halftime, and Campbell picked off a Tua Tagovailoa pass on the first play of the second half, returning it 34 yards for a touchdown. That was just one of three interceptions the Browns had against Miami.
Week 7 was a strong showing for Campbell, who also broke up another pass in the end zone and matched up well with Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. The Browns had to throw Campbell into the fire last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers with minimal preparation after the trade. That led to some rough moments, including giving up a 25-yard touchdown to DK Metcalf.
“I think that’s… obviously, we’re now getting Tyson. We’ll coach him up. He’s in great position; now it’s a matter of making a couple of those plays,” Kevin Stefanski said after the loss to the Steelers in Week 6. “But really pleased with where he is. And he will only get better with Jim (Schwartz), with Brandon Lynch, with our coaches, as we get him playing in this scheme.”
Those plays came against the Dolphins in Week 7, helping the Browns right the ship — at least for now. Cleveland (2-5) will travel to face the New England Patriots next weekend before heading into its bye week.
Games against the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens will follow the break. The Browns may not win many games this season, but Sunday’s win was one they needed — and their newest addition provided a much-needed spark of optimism.
