The Cleveland Browns were dropped by the San Francisco 49ers in Week 13 of the NFL season, falling 26-8 at home. As a result, the Browns are now 3-9 on the year and once again failed to stack wins after beating the Las Vegas Raiders.

The loss to the 49ers was only part of the bad news for Cleveland on Sunday. The Browns have unfortunately lost standout DT Maliek Collins, who head coach Kevin Stefanski announced on Monday will miss the rest of the season with a quad injury that will require surgery.

Losing DT Maliek Collins is significant for the Browns

“Very disappointed for Maliek, and he’s obviously been playing such good football and provides great leadership for this football team,” Stefanski said on Monday. “Disappointed for him, but he will bounce back.”

Cleveland signed Collins to a two-year deal in free agency after he was released by the 49ers, and the move has paid off. Collins has 6.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits this season. The improvement on the interior defensive line with Collins and rookie DT Mason Graham has been a major reason Myles Garrett has been able to elevate his sack production this year. Garrett has 19 sacks through 12 games to lead the league, and he has admitted that the help around him has been a big part of that success.

It has been a career year for Collins, and having it cut short is unfortunate. The veteran defensive tackle had been playing at a Pro Bowl level, and his final stat line was trending toward one of the best of his career. Now the Browns will need more from second-year DT Mike Hall Jr. and veteran DT Shelby Harris.

In addition to Collins’ injury, RG Wyatt Teller is dealing with a calf issue and is considered “week-to-week.” Along the offensive line, RT Jack Conklin is also in the concussion protocol. Week 13 was disastrous for the Browns all around. Next up are the one-win Tennessee Titans and a chance for Cleveland to get back on the winning side.
