Browns’ Kevin Stefanski may have just told us how he feels about his job security in Cleveland
Entering Week 8 of the NFL season, most teams around the league have a pretty good idea of who they are at this point. That is surely true for the Cleveland Browns, who sit at 1-6 on the campaign and have lost five straight games. On Wednesday, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced he would be […]
Entering Week 8 of the NFL season, most teams around the league have a pretty good idea of who they are at this point. That is surely true for the Cleveland Browns, who sit at 1-6 on the campaign and have lost five straight games.
On Wednesday, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced he would be making a change with who calls plays for the Cleveland offense. Stefanski is handing the play calling over to offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey going forward.
Reading between the lines, he told us more than that …
Kevin Stefanski’s job should be safe with the Browns despite disaster season
If Stefanski’s job was in jeopardy, do you think he would be comfortable placing what he does best in someone else’s hands? No, he wouldn’t, or at least he would be silly to do so. Cleveland’s offense is the worst in the NFL this season and there is no other way around it. It has been a failure from the top down. Coaches and players are both at fault for what has happened in Cleveland.
Before the season, the Browns signed Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry to five-year contract extensions. The franchise signaled that they firmly believe they are the two guys to do this job for the future.
Cleveland’s season was always going to hang on whether or not Deshaun Watson could return close to the player he was earlier in his career. That did not happen before he ruptured his Achilles and now he doesn’t have a chance to change it being sidelined. Poor quarterback play was a major issue for the team through the first seven games.
Cleveland is scoring just 15.6 points per game and has yet to score 20 points this season. That is an embarrassing fact that they have to own.
Flipping play callers likely isn’t as huge of a change as some think. Dorsey and Stefanski have both played a major role in the playbook and what is called on Sunday. With Winston now scheduled to be the starter, Dorsey gets his shot to call the plays.
Stefanski is a two-time NFL Coach of the Year and has led Cleveland to the playoffs twice in his previous four years. No one else in the past couple of decades can compete with Stefanski when it comes to Browns’ past coaches.
Stefanski will still be heavily involved in the offense, but this will now allow him to worry about the other parts of the game that are hurting the Browns. The penalty issue is something that comes to mind.
It is an ugly season for the Browns and they’re going to end with likely just a few wins, if that. But Stefanski putting play calling in the hands of Dorsey signals he feels safe about his job.
Browns’ Kevin Stefanski confirms a suspicion about Cleveland’s immediate plan at quarterback
The Browns have a new QB1 for now.
