The Cleveland Browns looked like they would move to 2-3 on the season for a good part of the Week 5 game in London against the Minnesota Vikings. Cleveland ended up dropping the game, 21-17, to the Vikings, but they took a step in the right direction on offense.
The Browns had no choice but to move on from QB Joe Flacco with the level of quarterback play he was putting on display. Six interceptions through the first four games were a disaster, and the Browns were wasting a good defense. Cleveland’s decision to go to Gabriel was a no-brainer, and the early returns show this was the right move.
Browns’ decision to go with the rookie quarterback already looks like the right one
Through the first four weeks of the season, the Browns hadn’t scored more than the 17 points they scored against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2. Cleveland’s offense looked much better in Week 5, and the quarterback played a big part in that. Gabriel finished 19-of-33 passing for 190 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers against a very good Vikings’ defense. Following his first career start, the former third-round pick now leads the Browns in touchdown passes.
Quinshon Judkins was the main offensive catalyst for Cleveland with 110 rushing yards on 21 runs. The Browns look to have knocked it out of the park with their draft class, and this game showed that.
Harold Fannin Jr. caught the first touchdown pass from Gabriel, and fellow rookies LB Carson Schwesinger and Mason Graham had an impact on the defensive side. Gabriel’s ability to get the ball out quickly, move if needed, and throw accurate passes all flashed against the Vikings. Again, this was a Brian Flores-coached defense he did it against.
Heading into the season, it was known that Flacco wouldn’t have a long leash. The turnover issues and stagnant offense resulted in few points, making the leash even shorter. Gabriel came in and didn’t turn the ball over, and the offense moved the ball enough. The Browns’ defense gave up 338 yards of offense to Minnesota, and that is the most it’s given up this season. Cleveland will look back on this one as a game it probably should have won with two forced turnovers, and it’s now a 1-4 team.
