Just one week of exhibitions remain around the NFL and it’ll be the most normal feeling one for the Cleveland Browns yet.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that the starters will indeed play against the Kansas City Chiefs next Saturday.
Stefanski said to expect the starters to play “20 to 25 plays”.
Of course, this will be the most the Browns starters have played yet this preseason. The starting offense minus RB Nick Chubb, WR Amari Cooper, and LG Joel Bitonio played 12 snaps against the Washington Commanders in the second preseason game.
Since taking over for the Browns, Stefanski has not been one to play his starters much in the preseason. Against the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, the starters did not play at all.
Cleveland used the joint practices with the Eagles as their biggest ramp-up for the season. Stefanski views the joint practices as a better chance to get your starters out there in a controlled environment.
“It really is a good matchup for us to go against from a schematic and just a really good football team. This is a Super Bowl runner-up that we’re going against,” Stefanski said prior to practicing with the Eagles.
On defense, Myles Garrett has not played in a preseason game yet so Saturday will likely be his debut. The plan is for select starters to still sit out.
“We’ll see. We’ll see how that goes. We normally don’t but we’ll see how it goes,” Reid told reporters.
Chiefs typically don’t play starters in the final preseason game but HC Andy Reid left the door open for it to happen, specifically QB Patrick Mahomes.
Some view it as questionable to play starters but with the season fast approaching, the Browns are going to roll out their starters for at least a couple drives against the Chiefs.
