The Cleveland Browns’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2 was a lopsided one, ending 41-17. Cleveland turned the ball over twice and had a punt blocked — mistakes that fueled Baltimore’s parade of points. Despite holding Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to under 250 yards of total offense, the Browns still lost by three scores. Everything that could have gone wrong in the second half, did.

Issues started early as well, with Cleveland’s offensive line struggling once again. A week after the Cincinnati Bengals gave them fits in the second half of a close game, the line put together another poor showing. The Browns were already without RT Jack Conklin, who is sidelined with an eye injury. But they were also without LT Dawand Jones for stretches of the game and the reason is concerning.

Kevin Stefanski revealed reason for Dawand Jones leaving the game and returning

Stefanski said after the game Jones was limited at times against Baltimore due to the heat. That’s not something you see very often. Jones, listed at 6-foot-8 and 374 pounds, had to sub out for 10 plays because of the heat. And it wasn’t an extreme-weather game—it was just a warm September afternoon in Cleveland.

The Browns hope that Jones can be their long-term solution at left tackle, but moments like this raise questions. Heat usually isn’t a major factor in Cleveland, especially once October hits, but early-season 1 p.m. kickoffs can still be a little warm. Regardless, Jones is in his third year as a pro, and he should be expected to be in the kind of shape that allows him to finish a game.

Week 1 was especially rough for Jones—he allowed seven pressures and two quarterback hits on Joe Flacco, per Pro Football Focus. Against Baltimore, he improved significantly, giving up just one pressure in 44 pass-blocking reps. He also committed one penalty, down from four in the opener. Cleveland had once hoped Jedrick Wills Jr. would be their franchise tackle to replace Joe Thomas, but that didn’t pan out. Now, Jones is the next man up. The former Ohio State Buckeye has flashed promise, even as a rookie in 2023 when he made nine starts and often looked the part. But he hasn’t yet put together the necessary technique and conditioning to prove he can thrive in the NFL. If he can, issues like Sunday’s won’t keep popping up and he’ll take that next step as a player.
