Shedeur Sanders made his first career start against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12, and it went much better than his debut the previous week, when he played only a half. As a result, the Browns picked up their third win of the season over the Raiders, 24-10.

With Dillon Gabriel missing the Raiders game due to being in the concussion protocol, Sanders was able to get all of the first-team reps during the week and fared much better as a result. After the win, head coach Kevin Stefanski wasn’t ready to name a starting quarterback moving forward. That has now changed.

Kevin Stefanski announces Shedeur Sanders will start against the 49ers

Stefanski named Sanders the starting quarterback for the game against the 49ers and added that Gabriel has cleared concussion protocol. It’s important to note that this decision is only for the 49ers game, as Stefanski said he will take the position on a week-to-week basis. While Sanders hasn’t been named the starter for the rest of the season, he now has the opportunity to earn that role.

Playing the 49ers will be a significant step up in competition from the Raiders, and it will also mark Sanders’ first start in front of a home crowd. The Browns offense functioned better with multiple explosive plays in Week 12, and they’ll need more of that. Sanders completed just 11 of 20 passes, but he threw for 206 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown to rookie running back Dylan Sampson.

Gabriel, who started six games this season, has totaled only 937 passing yards and has surpassed 200 yards just once. While he has protected the ball with a 7–2 touchdown-to-interception ratio, his reluctance to push the ball downfield has limited the offense. Sanders is more aggressive vertically, and the Browns appear ready to live with the results of that approach. Sanders will now get another full week of practice and a chance to move the Browns to 4–8 on the season when they host the 49ers.
